Living with back pain can turn simple days into long ones. Sitting at work, picking up groceries, or trying to sleep through the night may all start to feel harder than they should. At TX Spine and Joint in Houston, Dr. Ankur Mehta and our team take the time to listen, explain what we find in plain language, and talk through options that may help you feel more like yourself again.

You do not need to know medical terms to get started. You just need a clear next step.

When Everyday Back Pain Becomes a Real Problem

Most people pull a muscle or wake up stiff now and then. That kind of discomfort often eases with rest and time. It may be time to seek care when pain:

  • Lasts more than a few weeks or keeps coming back
  • Limits walking, driving, work, or sleep
  • Travels into the buttock or leg (see also our sciatica page)
  • Makes you avoid activities you used to enjoy
  • Came on after a lift, fall, or long stretch of sitting

Persistent back pain is common—and it is also worth evaluating. Early clarity can help you avoid guessing your way through weeks of frustration.

How We Figure Out What May Be Causing Your Pain

Your first visit is a conversation as much as an exam. We ask when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects your day. Dr. Mehta reviews your history, performs a focused physical exam, and looks at any imaging you already have (MRI, X-ray, or other reports).

If more information would help, we may suggest additional evaluation. The goal is not a stack of tests for their own sake—it is a clearer picture of what may be driving your symptoms so we can discuss next steps that fit you.

We do not diagnose or prescribe through this website. Your plan is built in person after clinical evaluation.

Treatment Options We May Discuss

Care is individualized. Depending on what we find, options may include:

  • Activity guidance and conservative approaches aimed at easing symptoms and supporting function
  • Image-guided injections when appropriate to help calm irritated areas
  • Regenerative options for carefully selected patients
  • Minimally invasive approaches such as Vertiflex Superion for certain spinal stenosis patterns, when appropriate
  • Coordination with physical therapy or other providers when that supports your goals

Not every option is right for every person. We explain why something may—or may not—make sense for your situation, in language you can follow.

Regenerative Care and Vertiflex—When They May Fit

Some patients ask about regenerative treatments as a way to support the body’s own healing response. When appropriate, we discuss whether those options may be a reasonable part of your plan.

Others have narrowing in the spinal canal (spinal stenosis) that makes standing or walking painful. For select patients, Vertiflex Superion is a minimally invasive option that may help create more space in the canal. We only recommend it when the clinical picture supports it—and we explain the “why” before anything moves forward.
