Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty in Houston

A sudden, deep back pain after a minor fall—or even after coughing or bending—can signal a vertebral compression fracture, especially when bones are thin from osteoporosis or other conditions. Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are minimally invasive procedures Dr. Ankur Mehta offers at TX Spine and Joint in Houston to help stabilize certain fractured vertebrae when appropriate.

What Are Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty?

Both procedures place bone cement into a compressed vertebral body to stabilize the fracture from the inside.

  • Vertebroplasty introduces cement directly into the fractured bone.
  • Kyphoplasty typically uses a small balloon first to create a cavity (and may help restore some height) before cement is placed.

Image guidance is used throughout. These are not treatments for every type of back pain—they are aimed at specific fracture patterns after proper imaging and clinical review.

Who May Be a Candidate?

In general (not medical advice), candidates often have:

  • Acute or subacute pain matching a compression fracture on MRI or other imaging
  • Pain that limits standing, walking, or sleep despite bracing, activity modification, and medications
  • Fractures related to osteoporosis or similar bone-weakening conditions

You may need a different path if the fracture is unstable in a way that requires surgical consultation, if infection or tumor needs different management, or if symptoms are better explained by disc, nerve, or facet problems. We refer or coordinate when that is the safer course.

What to Expect

1. Confirm the fracture. Imaging and exam come first. 2. Procedure discussion. We explain kyphoplasty vs. vertebroplasty in your specific case, risks, and aftercare—without inflated promises. 3. Procedure day. Usually outpatient or short-stay depending on overall health. Local anesthesia with sedation or anesthesia support as appropriate. 4. Recovery basics. Gradual return to upright activity; we outline lifting limits and follow-up. Post-surgical / PT support under one roof can help restore confidence and posture once the fracture is stabilized.

How Therapy Fits

After vertebral cementation, gentle, guided movement matters. Our physical therapy and, when useful, aquatic therapy teams can help you rebuild endurance safely. Occupational therapy may address home-safety and daily-task strategies that reduce fall risk—an important part of protecting other vertebrae.
