When facet-related or sacroiliac (SI) joint pain keeps returning after temporary relief from blocks, radiofrequency ablation (RFA)—sometimes called radiofrequency neurotomy—may be part of the conversation. At TX Spine and Joint in Houston (Long Point / Spring Branch area), Dr. Ankur Mehta offers radiofrequency and SI radiofrequency as listed among our pain therapy options.
Radiofrequency uses carefully placed needles and controlled heat to interrupt pain signals from specific nerves that serve irritated joints in the spine or SI region. The idea is longer-lasting relief than a short-acting steroid or numbing injection alone—though results and duration vary by person.
SI radiofrequency targets nerves related to the sacroiliac joint when that joint is a likely pain source (see also our SI joint pain page).
RFA is usually considered after diagnostic blocks (such as medial branch blocks or facet injections) suggest those nerves are involved.
Generally speaking (not medical advice), RFA may be discussed if you have:
It may not be appropriate if blocks did not help, if another pain generator is more likely, or if medical factors raise risk. Your exam and imaging guide the decision.
1. Confirm the source. Diagnostic blocks often come first so we are treating the right nerves. 2. Procedure day. Image guidance helps place probes accurately. You receive local anesthesia; sedation may be used when appropriate. Expect a focused visit—not an overnight hospital stay for typical outpatient RFA. 3. Aftercare. Mild soreness at the treatment sites is common for a short period. We give clear home instructions and a follow-up plan. 4. Function focus. As pain eases, we encourage gradual return to activity—often with PT support.
No guaranteed outcomes. We measure progress by how you feel and what you can do again.
RFA can calm a pain pathway; therapy rebuilds capacity. Our clinic offers PT, OT, aqua, and post-surgical therapy so you can strengthen the muscles that support your spine and pelvis while tissues settle. That combination often matters more than either step alone.
Insurance card, medication/allergy list, and imaging if available. Ask us about coverage for diagnostic blocks and RFA—plans differ.
