Leg pain, buttock pain, or neck-and-arm symptoms that travel along a nerve path often improve when inflammation around a spinal nerve settles. An epidural steroid injection—including transforaminal approaches—is one way we may help calm that irritation. At TX Spine and Joint in Houston’s Spring Branch area, Dr. Ankur Mehta performs these procedures as part of our pain therapy offerings.
An epidural injection places anti-inflammatory medication into the epidural space near irritated spinal nerves. Think of it as delivering medicine close to the “wiring” that is inflamed—not into the spinal cord itself.
A transforaminal epidural approaches the nerve through the natural opening (foramen) where the nerve exits the spine. Your anatomy and imaging help decide which approach makes sense. We also offer related options such as epidural lysis of adhesions when scar tissue is part of the picture—discussed only if your history supports it.
These injections are tools to reduce inflammation and create a window for movement and therapy—not a cure-all promise.
In general (not medical advice), candidates often have:
You may need a different plan if infection, bleeding risk, uncontrolled medical issues, or other findings make injection unsafe. We screen carefully.
1. Consult. We review symptoms, prior treatments, and imaging. 2. Procedure. Image guidance helps place the needle accurately. Local anesthesia is used; light sedation may be offered when appropriate. Most visits are outpatient. 3. Same-day recovery basics. You will need a driver if sedation is used. Mild soreness at the site can occur. 4. Follow-up. We check whether pain and function improve enough to progress activity and therapy.
Relief timing and duration differ person to person. We set expectations honestly.
When nerve pain quiets, you can often move more. That is the moment physical therapy—and sometimes aqua therapy—becomes especially useful: building strength and mobility while tissues are less angry. Occupational therapy can help if work tasks or fine-motor needs are limited. Our under-one-roof therapy services make coordination simpler.
Insurance card, medication and allergy list, and MRI/CT reports if you have them. Ask our team about coverage—epidural benefits vary by plan.
