Chronic nerve-related pain can make walking, sleeping, and working feel exhausting. If you live in Houston or near Spring Branch and have already tried medications, therapy, or injections with limited relief, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) may be one option Dr. Ankur Mehta discusses at TX Spine and Joint.
This page explains SCS in everyday language. It is educational only—not a diagnosis.
Spinal cord stimulation uses a small implanted device that sends mild electrical signals near the spinal cord. Those signals can change how pain messages travel to the brain. Many people describe the goal as turning the “volume” of certain pain down—not erasing every sensation overnight.
SCS is typically considered for persistent pain after other reasonable steps have been tried. Care often includes a temporary trial period so you and your physician can see how you respond before deciding on a longer-term implant.
In general (not medical advice), people who ask about SCS often have:
You may not be a candidate if infection risk, pacemaker/device considerations, imaging findings, or other medical factors make SCS unsafe or unlikely to help. Dr. Mehta reviews your history, exam, and imaging before recommending next steps.
1. Evaluation. We talk through your goals, prior treatments, and day-to-day limits. 2. Education. If SCS may fit, we explain the trial process, device basics, and follow-up—in plain words. 3. Trial (when appropriate). A temporary system lets you test whether stimulation meaningfully reduces pain and improves function for you. 4. Decision together. Based on the trial and your experience, we discuss whether a permanent system makes sense—or whether another path in our pain therapy menu is better.
We do not promise specific percentages of relief. Responses vary.
Stimulation alone is rarely the whole story. As pain becomes more manageable, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or aqua therapy under one roof can help rebuild strength, stamina, and confidence for work and daily life. We coordinate timing so therapy supports—not fights—your recovery plan.
Bring your insurance card, medication list, and any MRI/X-ray or operative reports. Insurance coverage for SCS trials and implants varies. Ask our team to help verify benefits before you commit.
